TransRockies Ultramarathon Race Training Tips For Regular People

One of the questions we hear most frequently from first-time and potentialTransRockies riders is how much do I need to train? Many people find it daunting to think about preparing for a week of hard riding and hiking that will last over 40 hours.

Ride the TransRockies with a good riding buddy.

Most riders can complete TransRockies in as little as 12-15 hours per week during peak training. It is important to train regularly throughout winter and spring, so you can accumulate miles for the peak phase.

It can be difficult to get on the bike in winter due to poor weather and short days. However, if you are able to keep a balanced cross training program throughout the week that includes a few 1 1/2 hour rides, then you will be on track. Add the 2.5 hour weekday ride (30 minutes per day) and two solid weekends rides each week to get a base of 7 or 8 hours riding through winter. This will set you up well for TR 2009.

Your rides will improve as the weather gets better and the days get longer.

Our pros may spend 20-30 hours per week on their bikes, but recreational riders can manage with the following schedule. It’s a number that can be easily explained to friends and family without making them feel like you are crazy.

Do not be afraid. TransRockies can be tough. But it is possible with a positive attitude and realistic training loads.
